NEWS: March 2014

The German Boys Club Collects for NEEDS

Der Deutsche Buben Verein (The German Boys Club) is much more than a club for adult boys and girls. Founded in 1998 in Cincinnati and with the mantra “be a friend and make a difference in the Eworld” the club chose the North East Emergency Distribution Services (NEEDS) as the charitable focus for its March 8th Buben Winter Picnic.  Rita Musbach, a Der Deutsche Buben Verein member and NEEDS volunteer suggested NEEDS to her club.  At Mrs. Musbach’s invitation NEEDS Former President Cindy Andrew Cordell along with NEEDS Board Members Jackie Cutshall and Sally McConaughy attended the picnic.

“I hope this picture shows my ear to ear smile,” said Cindy Cordell. “I was overwhelmed with the Der Deutsche Buben Verein generosity both financially and in stock.” It took two cars to load the canned goods on a day with beautiful warm sunshine. The board of NEEDS as well as those who will benefit from the abundance of food and substantial financial support cannot thank Rita Musbach and Der Deutsche Buben Verein enough.

It is the mission of Northeast Emergency Distribution Service (NEEDS) to provide emergency assistance to the neediest families in the Northeast Cincinnati community. For the 4th year NEEDS is participating in the nationwide Alan Shawn Feinstein $1 Million Challenge to support hunger-fighting organizations.  Mr. Feinstein’s annual gift of $1 million is divided proportionately among all the Challenge participants based on the amount of money and non-perishable food items collected during the months of March and April 2014.  Each can/box/package of food donated during that time counts as $1.  The total of in-kind items and the dollars collected during those 2 months will be added together and counted as part of the challenge.

During March and April you can help NEEDS in the same two ways as Der Deutsche Buben Verein generously did.  First by writing a check to NEEDS, putting “Feinstein Challenge” in the memo line and sending it to:  NEEDS, 8341 Kenwood Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45236.  A second way is to collect canned goods and other non-perishable food items for NEEDS.  Both the money and the food items will be counted together to submit a total to the Feinstein Foundation and NEEDS will then receive a portion of the $1 Million promised by Mr. Feinstein.  The past 3 years that NEEDS has participated have brought the NEEDS pantry much needed food and financial help.

NEEDS is a community of 25 churches and civic organizations whose mission is to do God’s work through caring for their neighbors by providing basic emergency assistance.  NEEDS is an all-volunteer cooperative located in the Kenwood Baptist Church and NEEDS does not receive government support.  The NEEDS board oversees an active foodbank, as well as provides neighbors-in-need with housing and utility payment assistance.  During the year NEEDS supports local schools through school supply and clothing item drives. NEEDS serves more than 2,500 people in northeastern Hamilton County.

The NEEDS food pantry is located at the Kenwood Baptist Church, 8341 Kenwood Road, 45236 and is open Tuesday and Thursdays from 9 am – 1 pm.  Donations of canned goods and other items are always accepted at the NEEDS food pantry. Monetary gifts can be mailed to: NEEDS, 8341 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45236. For pick-up of donated items or to ask questions please call (513) 891-0850 (NEEDS) or checkout NEEDS website: http://www.cincyneeds.org.
